The first case of Omicron type Covid-19 virus was reported in Delhi on December 5, 2021. The patient is a returnee from Tanzania. He has been admitted to  LNJP Hospital. This is the fifth Omicron case in India after two more Omicron cases were reported on December 4, 2021.

The first two cases of Omicron type Covid-19 virus were reported in Karnataka and the third case of this virus was detected in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The fourth Omicron case in India was detected in Dombivli in Maharashtra. 

1st Omicron case in Delhi, Fifth in India: Check All details

The Tanzania returnee patient has been admitted to LNJP Hospital. Overall,  17 people who have come from abroad have been tested positive for Covid-19 and have been admitted to the hospital, informed Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain.

The State Health Minister has informed that samples of 12 out of the 17 positive passengers were sent for genome sequencing and one of them, who arrived from Tanzania, tested positive for Omicron according to preliminary reports.

The Third Omicron Case in India- All important details

Gujarat's first Omicron type Covid-19 case has been detected in a person who came from Zimbabwe. He has reportedly been infected with the variant. His test sample has been sent to Pune, as per the Gujarat state health department.

This was the third case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 to be reported in India. The earlier two cases were reported in Karnataka. 

The person was found to be positive for the Omicron COVID variant in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The health authorities have put him in isolation and are currently monitoring his condition. A micro containment zone has been created near the place where he was staying.

The State Health Department is currently tracing and testing people living in the area, as per Manoj Aggarwal, ACS, Health & Family Welfare Department, Gujarat. 

Fourth Omicron Variant case in India- Maharashtra

A 33-year-old person from Kalyan-Dombivli was found positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The person had recently returned from South Africa. This is the first case of the variant in Maharashtra and the fourth in the country.

The passenger had arrived in Mumbai on November 24 from Capetown, South Africa through Dubai and Delhi. He is not vaccinated.

The health authorities have traced 12 of his high-risk contacts and 23 low-risk contacts and all have been tested negative for COVID-19.

The 25 co-passengers from the Delhi-Mumbai flight have also been tested negative. More contacts of the patient are currently being traced.

Background of Omicron Variant

The new Omicron variant was first reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) from South Africa on November 25, 2021. WHO named the new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529 as Omicron on November 26th and classified it as a 'variant of concern' due to its high mutation capabilities. Several countries have imposed travel restrictions on southern African nations since the discovery. The new Omicron variant has now been confirmed in over 29 countries across the world.
