THE DANCE OF KITE
My dear colourful kite,
I like to watch you
soar so high
I like the way your
long tail,
Flaps and flutters
in the sky,
I like the way you ride
the wind,
And dance between
the clouds
When you’re so high up there
in the Sky
Colourful Kite,
You must feel so proud!

TEACHER
Among all the rest
Teacher, you are the best
You are so loving and kind
Inspite of our trouble
You do not lose your peace of mind.
You teach us the correct things
And to fly high by opening our wings
If we didn’t have someone like you
Then right now we would have been in the zoo.
You give us knowledge
Which in life will take us far
And help to shine bright like a star.

A BLESSING
Each one of us has come to the earth to serve some purpose assigned by the omnipotent Almighty. The purpose may be big or small, it hardly matters as there is always a scope for doing great things out of the slenderest ones.
Perhaps Kendriya Vidayalaya No.1, Mangagalore has been bestowed with the blessings of the supreme and the innumerable good wishes of the students who have had the honour of being a part of this prestigious Vidyalaya, thus, assigning it a purpose of imparting quality education, knowledge, discipline, physical well being and above all humanity among the students.
Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 has an enchanting view of an enormous yellow building amidst greenery. The greenery around and in the Vidyalaya is always mesmerising for nature lovers, which consists of a wide variety of plant species. The building looks old as it has seen many rough and unpolished stones being carved out into competent personalities.
Have you ever observed the Vidyalaya in total serenity? The lovely chirping of birds and unpleasant sound of the factories nearby gives you a strange feeling which you have never had before.
It is true that K.V. No.1 is No.1 in versatility and optimism.
It is highly impossible to regard this place as a school. Rather it is a second home for every child studying in the Vidyalaya where resides the love, affection, teaching and caring of teachers and the joy of playful, nice time with friends.

WHY THIS DISCRIMINATION ?
Can We Indians Not Be Fair To All Sports And Games ?
India is a country which, when thought of, symbolizes ‘Unity in Diversity’. Though being from different spheres of the society we Indians are tolerant towards all religions and languages. We live in unity and work together as a nation. We channelise our thoughts to bring about peace and happiness in our country.
Then why are we so intolerant when the issue turns to sports? Why do we Indians discriminate between cricket and other games ? I thought our motto was “Unity in Diversity”. Then why do we Indians allow cricket to rule as the King of Sports or shall I put it this way – why did we allow cricket to rule over other sports bring played in the country ?
In 2000, when Dhanraj Pillai’s team won the Hockey World Cup, they were only promised honour and gifts. Alas ! none of these promises were fulfilled. In contrast to this, when the Indian cricket team won the T 20 World Cup, they were showered with monetary gifts and honour. Why does the government turn a deaf year to the pleas of the players whose condition is so horrifying that they are unable to find themselves sponsors to pursue their career in sports and so they have to switch on to different career options ?
Another observable fact is that when Mr. Vishwanathan Anand won the World Chess Championships, not a soul cared. We should be proud of his achievement because 116 countries of the world play chess and becoming the World Champion is not less than a Herculean task.
Hockey is played by 61 countries and in comparison cricket is played by only twenty countries. What a shame that we Indians show so much favouritism ! Is this justifiable ?
My opinion on this aspect may send a message to your sensory receptors, of my being against cricket. But it is not so, I strongly support the slogan ‘Satyameva Jayate’. In association with this I am trying to show the true picture of our Indian psychology.
Are we not reducing the chances of our ‘Hindustan’ excelling and bringing laurels in everything ? Are we not reducing the concept of sports and games to an occasion of mere money making ?
These are the questions. But where to find the answers is the biggest question that continues to haunt me.

The Killer Disease – Hepatitis – B
Hepatitis B is a disease of times, caused by viral infection. This virus causes destruction of the inner tissue and many lead to liver cancer in life. How dangerous is Hepatitis B ? Hepatitis B is a major public health problem worldwide. It includes a high morbidity and mortality state because of its severe long term complications. Hepatitis B is a serious disease and results in the death of 2 million people world wide each year. In fact Hepatitis virus is 100 times more infectious than HIV and there is virtually no guaranteed cure. More than 80% liver cancer is the result of body fluids like saliva, blood and sweat.
Hepatitis B can be transmitted in a variety of ways and the minimal amounts of blood and body fluids required for the spread of the disease makes it a serious disease. Close contacts between family and young children, and colleagues, sexual transmission, blood, blood products, and contaminated materials spread this deadly disease. Active urination is the sole and only method to prevent and ultimately eradicate this infectious disease. Three does have to be taken as prevention against it.
Why should adolescents get vaccinated ?
1) Once an individual has contracted Hepatitis B virus, then there is no specific effective treatment. 2) Adolescence is an excellent opportunity for vaccination. 3) Out of every 20 people, 1 person is in contact with Hepatitis B. 4) The virus is stable in the environment for alteast one month. 5) Prevention of accidental exposure to blood is an objective of the recommendation made by WHO and CDL.
Why should children get vaccinated ?
(1) The younger the age of infection, the higher the probability of becoming a chronic carrier. (2) 350 million chronic carriers of its viruses are present world wide. (3) More than 1 million deaths occur per year.
E uwax-B is the best choice for the promotion of the Hepatitis B, as it is a WHO approved vaccine currently available in India.

The Place Which I Always Like to Visit
The place which I like to visit is Kolkata because it is the most wonderful city in India. It was once the Capital of India and now it is the capital of West Bengal. It stands on the river Hooghly. Kolkata is called the city of joy, as people of this city like to share their happiness with each other. There are many places in Kolkata which can be visited. These are: Bridges on the river Hooghly called Rabindra Sethu, Victoria Memorial Hall, Birla Planetorium, National Library, National Botanical Garden, Indian Museum, Belur Moth etc. Kolkata is the ony city in India where Trams and Metro rails were first started. There is a big port in Kolkata which is situated on the Hooghly river. This is very unique.
There is a Scinece City also to visit. It is India’s first Science City. This campus is very big and round in shape. There is a dinosaur’s idol at the entrance. There are many interesting glass houses in which so many beautiful plants and animals can be seen. There are nice aquariums and also interesting games in the Science City to enjoy.
Kolkata is full of noise and excitement. The streets are always crowded. Thousands and hundreds of vehicles pass along them. A newcomer to the Kolkata city is amazed by whay he sees in the city, still he would like to stay back in Kolkata. This is the beauty of Kolkata. This makes me visit the city again and again.

ADIEU ! ADIEU ! ADIEU !
IMPRESSIONS ABOUT MY SCHOOL
“Man is born an animal: with education he becomes a ‘man’.
Education literally means the giving of intellectual and moral instruction. The place of imparting of this knowledge is termed as a school. Literally, this meaning may apply, but practically , I don’t think it is very precise. A school, rather than being just a site for imparting education, should also serve as a second home for children, nourishing and shaping them up for the future.
Now coming to the school, K.V.No.1, Mangalore, that instills appreciation in the one uttering it and pride in those housed in it; I would say that this school has rather exceeded my expectations. It has leaped over the very boundaries of a simple literal definition and become something that we can actually call a school.
It has excelled in each and every aspect of a student’s aspirations.
I’m not somebody with a bundle of experiences in this school, but I’ve learnt a heavy lot in these three years of mine.
Ignoring the darker side, which includes all sorts of pranks and punishments, I’d rather say that I’ve practically enjoyed these 3 years; and shall continue to cherish the memories for the rest of my life.
My first year here, that was my 8th standard, wasn’t a very bright one; but my following year in 9th and my present year in 10th, have been excellent ones. Well, as for the 10th, I’d say it is practically laced up with exams and tension, which leaves hardly any room for even heaving a sigh of relief.
This school is a great institution and has taught me the values of life, bravery, boldness, importance of hard work and perspiration etc. A lively headmaster, a dynamic teaching staff (and of course not to forget us, the active bubbling students) is what has made the institution a vehement one.
Abigail once stated;
“If you want a place in the sun, you’ve got to put up with a few blisters”
I quote this sentence just to say that the hardships that we receive, are, well, acceptable as they are for our own welfare. Well, it is practically in a student’s nature to develop a repulsive attitude towards punishment. Even Benjamin Franklin said, “Things that hurt, instruct”.
We’ve also learnt the lessons of persistence, to keep going no matter what happens and never give up. This goes in line with Jon Kabat Semin’s words;
“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf”.
No matter what difficulties we are forced to encounter, it is better we gather the courage to cross over them; rather than lamenting at their very sight.
These are the lessons that have helped to make us what we are now and shall also help make what we’ll be later.
As my narrow range of experience force me to pull a full stop here, I’d like to end saying the words of Francis Williardi, which has practically formed the base of my education;
“I wouldn’t waste my friction, when it could be turned into momentum”.

EAST OR WEST, OUR K.V. IS THE BEST
For common people, temple is a place of worship and the idols kept in it are the Gods and Goddesses but for students like us, our school is the place of worship and our teachers are our Gods and Goddesses.
Schools play a very important role in the life of a person. His every identity, that is, his character and behaviour etc. depends on schools. Children right from the age of 3, in fact, go to schools and learn different things from their teachers. They grow up believing and practicing the same. Hence, it is very important that schools which are the basic foundations of the development and future of a person lead us in the right way with good education, moral values most of all, the basic manners.
Considering the above, I am proud to say that my school, Kendriya Vidyalaya is an excellent school where one can expect anything and everything needed for the development of a child to happen. Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 Mangalore is a sub unit of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. In a KV, we get very good education. In fact, the best education in the right way of teaching. In today’s competitive world, education is necessary which is very good in my school. We also have highly trained and efficient teachers teaching us. They not only complete their duties of teaching but also become a part of our lives. They are like our second parents. Teachers in KV No.1 Mangalore put their best efforts to teach the subject in the best way so that even the slow learners can grasp it very easily.
The quality of a school largely depends on its learning and school atmosphere. The atmosphere in our school is very good students compete with each other in a good and healthy mindset which is very important for their development.
We students are very lucky to have a very good computer lab, an excellent audio-visual room with highly sophisticated equipments and very improvised classrooms, with no scarcity of desks and benches. Overall, we have very good infrastructural facilities in our school.
School life is not complete just by having good education, you should also put yourself forward to participate in co-curricular activities and sports. This is just what our school has been encouraging us to do. It gives us a wide range of opportunities to participate in activities, like singing, dancing, English debate, sports etc. which are good at.
We have our kind and beloved Principal who is the backbone of our school. He is such a good and a dynamic person that he encourages us to do everything. He wants his school to be No.1 in every field.
We are very lucky to render a little service to our society through the Scouts and Guides movement which is widely spread in our school. A feeling of patriotism is indulged in us by celebrating all the major National festivals. We are made to interact with students even outside our country through an excellent website known as think.com, which all students above call VI, are a part of.
We have students coming from different parts of our country. We are so lucky to meet them and interact with them and know more about their language, culture etc. Adventurous activities like mountain climbing, parasailing etc. are largely undertaken in our school which makes the student sportive, adventurous and we also learn to work in teams.
There are many more things that make our school the best. It is not only the best in Mangalore, but also all over the country. Considering all these, I can proudly say,
EAST OR WEST, OUR K. V. IS THE BEST !
I am proud of my school
And shall put in
All efforts to make
My School proud of me.

Books and Reading
Happy is the man who acquires the habit of reading when he is young. He has secured a life-long source of pleasure, instruction and inspiration – so long as he has his beloved books, he need never feel lonely. He always has a pleasant Occupation of leisure moments so that he never feels bored. He is the possessor of wealth more precious than gold. Ruskin calls books “Kings’ Treasures” – treasures filled not with gold and silver and precious stones, but with riches much more valuable than theses – knowledges, noble thoughts and high ideals.
Thus, poor indeed is the person who does not read. The blessings which are provided by the books are innumerable and plenty, provided we choose the right books. Reading gives very high kind of pleasure and amusement – like good novels. And novels and books of imagination should have their place in everybody’s reading. When we are tired and our brain starts to be weary due to studies, then inducing yourself into a story written by a master mind gives recreation and enjoyment.
But to reading nothing but books, are like eating nothing but sweets. As we need plain and nutritious food everyday, so must we have serious reading fro the mind. Here we can choose according to our taste. There are many books on geography, history, biography, philosophy, travel, science etc. which we ought to read, and which would give not only enjoyment but education too. And then we can develop a taste for serious reading. Nor should poetry be neglected for the best poetry gives us noble thoughts and gets us beautiful imagination clothed in lonely and musical language.
Books are the most faithful of friends. Our friends may change or die but books area always patiently waiting to talk to us. They never cross, peevish or unwilling to converse. Thus there is no wonder a reader becomes a “book lover”.

MUMMIES
It is the Egyptian mummies that I am referring to here. They have always interested me and most of who I know. So, I did a bit of search on the internet and here goes what I found.
Basically, mummification is the process of preservation of a body, either animal or human. The Egyptian mummies were deliberately made by drying the body and by doing so, they eliminated and source of decay. Natron, a natural substance containing sodium carbonate and some other materials, was used for drying. Sodium carbonate works as the drying agent, drawing the water out of the body (Well.. You should pay attention in your chemistry class).
The Egyptians believed that there were six important aspects that made up a human being. The physical body, shadow, name, spirit, and the aksh i.e., immortality. Without a body, none of these would be present. By mummification, the Egyptians believed they were assuring themselves a successful rebirth into the afterlife (interesting uh ?).
The Egyptians removed all the internal organs with the exception of heat and stored them in a canopic jars. Sometimes, it is also said that some Egyptians would take the organs of the dead and eat them to show their worship to their Kind or Queen (yucks!!).
A large amount of gold ornaments and jewels and stuff for daily use were placed in the coffin and the chamber along with mummy so that the Kind or Queen could use them in their life after death.
You know what ? Mummies were sold as pharmaceuticals in powdered form centuries ago as they were believed to have medicinal properties against bleeding. So a lot of mummies were destroyed in such practices, existed earlier. It is also said that the outer coverings of the mummies were used to make paper and proved useful for various purposes.
The interest of science has increased a lot in this field and two scientists were even successful in mummifying a dead body (which is now on display in the British Museum) using instructions from the ancient Greek texts.
So,….that’s all about it ! Hope all this was informative.
